Ballet British Columbia
FOR EVER
A full evening of premieres from Ballet BC Artistic Director Medhi Walerski closes the season. A powerful tribute to The Rite of Spring, the epic Chamber makes its long-awaited company premiere. SWAY, an intimate exploration of hope, is shared with North American audiences for the first time. Plus an anticipated world premiere, Walerski’s first new creation since the success of just BEFORE right AFTER, and a never before seen creative collaboration with internationally renowned mixed media artist Lyle XOX.
Chamber
Choreography Medhi Walerski Canadian Premiere One of Walerski’s most acclaimed works to date, Chamber is a visually rich echo of what Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring provokes in the choreographer’s imagination. Danced by a large ensemble to a stunning score by Joby Talbot, the work is a primal, ritualistic piece which seeks to balance order and chaos—ultimately underlining the duality between the collective and the individual nature of humankind.
SWAY
Choreography Medhi Walerski North American Premiere Inspired by Emily Dickinson’s 1862 poem ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers,’ and set to a gorgeous composition by frequent collaborator Adrien Cronet, SWAY invokes the lyrical movement language Walerski has become known for. Fluid, harmonic transitions between duets and the group create timeless moments just as fleeting as the hope described by the poet. An ode to movement and its ability to communicate without words.
New Creation
Choreography Medhi Walerski World Premiere Walerski continues his meaningful contributions to the company and the world of dance with a brand new addition to Ballet BC’s repertoire. This marks his sixth creation for Ballet BC, following work such as Petite Cérémonie, Prelude, and notably, Romeo and Juliet, which have captivated audiences in Vancouver and around the globe. Closing the 23/24 season, this eagerly anticipated new work is not to be missed.

The season continues with an evening featuring a new commission from LA-based emerging voice Micaela Taylor, the return of The Statement from the brilliant Crystal Pite, and a follow-up world premiere from Out Innerspace, a Vancouver-based duo making waves around the world. An all-West Coast program celebrating the exceptional work of some of today’s top women choreographers.
World Premiere New Creation Choreography Micaela Taylor Following her company debut with the 2022/23 Ballet BC Annex project, stellar LA-based dancer and choreographer Micaela Taylor returns with a new commission. Taylor is being widely recognized for her fresh and distinctive choreographic voice, which uses varied physical shapes and textures including exaggerated gesture and athletic theatricality as expressions of one’s authentic self. Expect a compelling new creation from a rising star.
The Statement Choreography Crystal Pite Back by hugely popular demand, Crystal Pite’s The Statement is a tour de force dance-theatre hybrid that mesmerizes from start to finish. Four dancers move to an exacting script by Canadian playwright and close collaborator Jonathon Young. Locked in a battle for power and control, the characters have been tasked with fuelling a conflict in a distant country. Tensions rise when they are asked to take responsibility for their actions. A deeply salient work from one of the most brilliant choreographic voices of our time.
World Premiere New Creation Choreography Out Innerspace Following the success of Strange Attractor, a 2022 Ballet BC world premiere, Out Innerspace’s Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond are back with a brand new creation for the company. After successful individual careers as professional dancers including work with Kidd Pivot, Wen Wei Dance, Justine A. Chambers, Company 605, and Beijing Modern Dance Company, the choreographic duo are among today’s most sought-after Canadian voices in dance, with recent commissions by Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Hessisches StaatsBallett, and Gibney Dance.
